Collection Description:
The Sheridan Press, All American Indians Collection documents the annual All American Indian Days that happened in Sheridan, Wyoming each July or August from 1953 to 1980. Although Indian encampments took place during the Hop Sot Stampede in Sheridan from the 1930s to early 1950s. The first two folders in the collection are from this earlier event. Beyond discussing All American Indian days and the Miss Indian America that was also a part of the event, each issue includes articles on the state of indigenous people in the United States at the time. The Sheridan Press issues also included cultural and historical articles about indigenous peoples, often with a focus on the Crow and Northern Cheyenne. The issues also have short biographies of the participants in the Miss Indian America pageant. Advertisements in each issue also played on themes directly related to All American Indian Days or Miss Indian America.
The two programs in the collection include articles about American Indian issues of the time. They also include religious writings with an emphasis on Christianity and Native peoples, poetry, along with short historical and cultural pieces. The 1968 program includes writings by prominent indigenous authors including Vine Deloria and Marie Sandoz.
All American Indian Days ended in 1980, while Miss Indian America continued as a solo event until 1984 when it moved to Bismark, North Dakota.
